Health Insurance for Foreigners: Enrollment and Benefits
Foreigners staying in Korea longer than 6 months are required to join the National Health Insurance system, under one of the two categories below.
Workplace-based subscriber
Applies to workers with a formal employment contract (such as E-9 holders). The premium is split between the worker and the employer, and is usually deducted directly from monthly wages.
Region-based subscriber
Applies to people who do not qualify as workplace-based subscribers. The premium is calculated based on declared income and assets, and is paid directly each month.
Basic benefits
You receive a large discount on medical costs at healthcare providers contracted with the insurance system, the same as Korean nationals enrolled in the program.
Where to get help
If you are unsure which category applies to you or need to enroll, call the National Health Insurance Service hotline 1577-1000, or ask your employer to help check your enrollment status.
